Steps (cont'd)

Once the application has been reviewed and evaluated, and it has been determined that the programs are appropriate, the institution will undertake a self-study in accordance with the outline presented in AABI's Outline for a Self-Study. A critical examination will be made of all facets of each academic program for which accreditation is sought, including its faculty, staff, administration, students, and resources. Performance histories of students will be analyzed, as well as projected enrollments and placement opportunities for graduates. The Self-Study should be completed within one year from date of approval of candidacy.

The Executive Director of the AABI and the Accreditation Committee Chair fully review the Self-Study to determine completeness of the report. The Executive Director then notifies the institution if any additional information is required and requests dates for a Visiting Team. Each Visiting Team will be made up of members having appropriate areas of interest and competence so that the institution's programs receive a thorough and rigorous review. The Visiting Team's purpose is to examine, in detail, the materials furnished in the Self-Study report to determine if the information is a reasonable and accurate assessment of the institution and the programs being considered for accreditation.

Upon completion of the campus visit, the Visiting Team prepares a report describing its findings. The report is forwarded to the institution for response. The report, institution response and the recommendations of the Accreditation Committee are presented to the AABI Board of Trustees for its review and subsequent action.

The Board action on each program is to accredit for five years with interim reports as required, or not to accredit. If the decision is not to accredit, the institution is notified of the reasons and afforded an opportunity for appeal.
